Implicit Bias in Practice: Evidence and Action

Need One More Hour?

Michigan requires 1 hour of implicit bias training for each year of your renewal cycle. On a 1-year cycle, that's 1 hour – and partial hours from an employer module, a hospital in-service, a conference session or an association CE often leave a licensee exactly one hour short at renewal.

This is that hour. $29, self-paced, certificate the same day.

Not What Bias Is. What Actually Reduces It.

Michigan's content standards at R 338.7004(5)(a) list four topic areas. Most implicit bias courses – including our own 2-hour course – sit in the first two. This one is built on the other two: the documented history behind present-day disparities, and what the current research does and does not support.

You'll be able to:

  • Describe documented historical practices in U.S. healthcare that contributed to present-day disparities, and identify a present consequence of each — (5)(a)(iii)
  • Explain what the Implicit Association Test measures, and evaluate the limits of what it predicts about individual behavior — (5)(a)(iv)
  • Interpret published data on disparities that persist after adjustment for insurance status, comorbidity and severity — (5)(a)(iv)
  • Evaluate what current research does and doesn't support about the durability of implicit bias training — (5)(a)(iv)
  • Identify where discretionary clinical decisions are most exposed to bias in your own scope of practice
  • Revise clinical documentation to remove inferential and stigmatizing language while preserving clinical accuracy
  • Construct a written action plan with concrete commitments, one measure to review, and one structural change to propose

Will It Stack With Hours I Already Have?

R 338.7004(4) doesn't permit the same training – or substantially identicaltraining – to count twice in one renewal cycle. This course covers the historical basis of health disparities and the current research on bias, which most short implicit bias courses don't touch. If your existing hours came from a course that covered the same ground, they won't stack.

An Applied Hour. Expect to Work.

There's no video and no audio to sit through. You read, you decide, you write.

  • Data analysis — interpret real disparity figures that survive adjustment for insurance status, comorbidity and severity
  • A guided self-audit — locate the points in your own workflow where discretionary decisions are most exposed to bias
  • A two-part case study — you're given a policy and a brief, and asked what the brief left out
  • A documentation exercise — rewrite real chart-note language, then compare against model answers
  • Your action plan — three concrete commitments, one measure to review, one structural change to propose. You download it and keep it

We'll Tell You What the Research Actually Says

The central finding in this literature is that changing implicit attitudes doesn't reliably change behavior. Awareness alone has limited durability.

That's why this hour is built the way it is: skill-building, structure and measurement are what the evidence supports, so that's what you spend the hour doing. You leave with a plan, not a feeling.

Every research claim carries a citation you can click.

About 90 Minutes

Certified as 1 hour, and the certificate says 1 hour. Some people take longer — plan for about 90 minutes, more if you write thorough responses to the two applied exercises.

Self-paced on desktop or mobile. Stop and come back whenever; your progress saves. A pre- and post-assessment bookend the course, because R 338.7004(5)(b) requires them for every training.

Your Certificate

Available the moment you finish. It carries your name, your completion date, the program title and hours, and the program sponsor – The CLU Academy. Those are the four details Michigan asks a licensee to retain under R 338.7004(6)(a). Keep it for six years.

It verifies that you completed Implicit Bias in Practice: Evidence and Action, 1 hour of implicit bias training meeting the content requirements of R 338.7004.

What Else You Get

  • Your bias interruption plan — the action plan you write in the final unit, downloadable and yours to keep
  • Model answers for the documentation exercise, to compare against your own
  • A clickable citation behind every research claim in the course
  • A receipt for reimbursement — most Michigan healthcare organizations reimburse required licensure training
  • Email supportsupport@thecluacademy.com

Can I Use This Toward Other CE?

Under R 338.7004(2), implicit bias training may also satisfy other training or continuing education requirements for renewal unless your board prohibits it. Requirements vary – confirm with yours.

Before You Begin

A first renewal can be a shortened, prorated cycle, and if you hold two licenses you may have two separate obligations. Confirm against your renewal notice before you rely on any hour count.

Simple, Transparent Pricing

Need all 3 hours? The 3-hour course is $69 — $9 less than buying the 2-hour and 1-hour separately.

Employer payment: many employers reimburse or directly cover required licensure training. A receipt is issued with your purchase.
